Halloween Trivia

Halloween

Viki's Valuable Finds has All Halloween Items on Sale: some
moved to online auction @ $.99 and others to 1/2 Price

Halloween 2011 is just around the
corner. Most families will celebrate this upcoming weekend since Halloween is on
Monday.

Do you know the history behind Halloween??
Look at this site for a brief glimpse:
http://halloweenhistory.org/

A few tips for your trick-or-treaters:

Below are some safety tips provided by the Kentucky State
Police for adults and youngsters so you can enjoy this special night:

  • 1. Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or
has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible.
  • 2. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult or older
           sibling.
  • 3. Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they
have been checked by an adult.
  • 4. Make sure your child is able to see out of their mask
properly and can walk in their costume without tripping.
  • 5. Remind kids not to enter a strange house or car.
  • 6. Inspect your child's candy before they eat it. Discard any
unwrapped or suspicious looking goodies. If your child does get sick, call your
doctor or the hospital emergency room immediately and save all wrappers. It is
also helpful to determine what he or she ate and where it came from.
  • 7. Talk to your children about ‘stranger-danger’ and the
safety precautions when around someone they do not know.

Enjoy your halloween!!

Made in USA

Made in USA

With Americans in great need of jobs, I decided to look into just how many factories continue to produce items "Made in USA" that I carry in my store, Viki's Valuable Finds .
These are the results:
Americo Inc. easily qualified for this group of listings. They are located in West Memphis, Arkansas and produce vinyl goods. Domestic products are used in all of their manufacturing.
Syracuse China Co., founded as Onondaga Pottery Company, was bought out by Libbey glassware manufacturers. Libbey continues to operate 2 manufacturing facilities in the USA - in Lousianna and Ohio as well as worldwide.
Pfaltzgraff is another pottery manufacturer whose pieces Viki's Valuable Finds carries when available. They sold out to Lifetime Brands York PA. Pfaltzgraff has no manufacturing in the USA as of July 2005.
Sakura, a major marketer of consumer dinnerware, was acquired by Oneida in 2000. In 2006 Oneida was reorganized under Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Carrollton China Co., one of eight firms who consolidated in 1929 as the American Chinaware Corporation, to survive the Depression and save the future of pottery made in USA. This company ceased production in 1932.
Smith Corona Typewriter Company ,started in 1886, launched the world's first laptop personal word processor. By 2010, they were no longer producing typewriters and have built a manufacturing facility in Cleveland Ohio to manufacture labels and ribbons.
Helpful Hints:
Take a few extra moments to make sure that you know where your items are being made.
Remember to always check the actual label on each item that you plan to purchase to make sure of the country of manufacture. Last week while shopping in the mall with my daughter we came across jeans with the company name "Made in USA". The only problem was that when I looked at the label it said, "Made in China".
Some American companies still have corporate offices in the USA however all of their manufacturing takes place out of the country. It is then shipped back to be sold.

More to come: I have to stop and think about the jobs that have been lost in the USA so that we could all have more cheaper. Long term, is it really worth what it is costing the American people??

Exciting day in my eBay World!

This day has just been filled with lots of great things! I was able to replace the Halloween items that I sold at the first store, find white tissue paper and envelopes. I just finished putting together a listing with a new template. did I mention that I think that is why my Halloween items sold so well??
Anyway this is my new template listing:

September Blog

September Blog

As we start the month of
September, 2011 we have many reasons to feel Blessed:

My mother turned 85 on the
last day of August. Many of her friends dropped by to enjoy a celebration
on the big day. Earlier in the month she enjoyed having many of her nieces
and nephews come for a reunion.
The Labor Day Homecoming
Reunion in my hometown of McKenzie, Tennessee seems to have been a HUGE
success. Sorry I had to miss this one - Hopefully, the next one won't be
40 years in the making.
If you would like to enjoy
some of the music from the 70's try the

We live in South Texas and
our house is not in danger from fire. There have been several fires close
to us but nothing that caused us to be evacuated. There were

evacuations in the North Central section

of San Antonio

. Today I am having major problems
breathing.  Local allergists are recommending staying inside unless
you have no other choice.

This week I have come across a wonderful site on Facebook - it is  The Power of the eBay Community. It is amazing the topics that come up and the well thought out answers. If you sell on eBay you might want to give it a try.

I have really been busy with eBay this week. I filled out all of the paperwork to become a Trading Assistant and can now sell your "stuff" for you on eBay.
In addition, I am listing some items that I have never considered listing before with a short explanation of why I decided to list those particular items. Today, I listed 4 different new items:

2 pack eco friendly tote bags with both shoulder and hand handles  I am always searching for eco friendly ways to support our global environment. These bold black & white patterned bags look chic and will blend with anything that you happen to be wearing. I also love that they do not have any store names or advertising and have a wide 10" bottom. These bags should easily handle many of the bulky items that don't fit most bags.

312 Individual Lipton Tea Bags  On a shopping tour for my family in my small hometown I was amazed at the price that they were asking for 1 box of 100 Lipton Tea Bags. Having recently bought a 3 box package at Sam's Club I knew that I was paying almost as much for 1 box of 100 as I had just paid for 3 boxes with 312 individual tea bags. Have you ever tried to make 1 simple cup of hot tea using 1 of the gallon  bags?? Let's just say "It does not work very well!" so I paid the exorbinant price for 1 box. I now ship boxs of tea (both Lipton black pekoe tea and organic green tea) to my family in small town America.
The "big city" experience that made the biggest impression on me was ordering hot tea at a nice (starched white tablecloths & napkins) restaurant. The waiter brought a beautiful wooden box (similar to a silverware chest) to our table and opened it to present their varieties of Bigelow teas in their individual foil packages. I was so impressed that I have always felt a little "partial" to Bigelow teas. I can purchase 1 box of 100 for basically the same that I would pay for a small fancy box in the grocery store.

Premium Bigelow Organic Green Tea Bags

Crystal Light On The Go Drink Mix

My son just returned from a 1 year deployment in Iraq. They were provided with all of the bottled water that they could possibly drink. He quickly found that he enjoyed the water much more if he occasionally had some flavored drink mix to add to a bottle of water. This variety pack worked out to be the best because it included 4 different flavors.
Other family members have also enjoyed having the different flavors in their bottles of water.

Take this opportunity to visit my eBay store to check out the newly added items.

I hope all of you are safe from the weather - whether your area has extremely high temperatures (110 degrees here today) or recovering from the effects of Hurricane Irene.

Have a great week.

2011 Spring Dinnerware Violets & Daffodils

This week brings Spring Dinnerware to Viki's Valuable Finds.
I am ready for Spring 2011 to arrive!! I am not a big fan of winter. I live in South Texas and am a firm believer that "winter" might possibly have one or two days where the temperature gets to the freezing mark. After that, it is time for Spring.
Growing up in Northwest Tennessee the first flowers that I remember each spring were: johnny-jump-ups (violets) and daffodils. We lived "out from town" where there were lots of empty spaces. I loved seeing the daffodils pop up in bloom in the middle of a field or under a tree where they must have been planted long ago. Johnny-jump-ups were always such a delightful surprise since they were usually tucked away under a tree or on a mossy creek bank. When we saw the daffodils and violets we knew Spring really was going to come. There would still be a cold, sharp breeze but the sun was shining and Spring was coming.
I have decided that this winter has been long enough, especially for those who don't get out when the temperature is below 40 or above 80. Across many parts of America & the rest of the world 2011 has been an unusually cold, wet and "not so wonderful" winter. Join me in getting ready for Spring.

This week you will notice the addition of several items that are spring dinnerware:
violet luncheon plates & cups
violet mug
violet salad plates
Daffodil salad plates

These should all be listed in the Grandma's Goodies category of Viki's Valuable Finds @ http://www.vikisvaluablefinds.com/.
Enjoy!
