A few tips for your trick-or-treaters:

Below are some safety tips provided by the Kentucky State
Police for adults and youngsters so you can enjoy this special night:

  • 1. Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or
has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible.
  • 2. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult or older
           sibling.
  • 3. Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they
have been checked by an adult.
  • 4. Make sure your child is able to see out of their mask
properly and can walk in their costume without tripping.
  • 5. Remind kids not to enter a strange house or car.
  • 6. Inspect your child's candy before they eat it. Discard any
unwrapped or suspicious looking goodies. If your child does get sick, call your
doctor or the hospital emergency room immediately and save all wrappers. It is
also helpful to determine what he or she ate and where it came from.
  • 7. Talk to your children about ‘stranger-danger’ and the
safety precautions when around someone they do not know.

Enjoy your halloween!!

Made in USA

Made in USA

With Americans in great need of jobs, I decided to look into just how many factories continue to produce items "Made in USA" that I carry in my store, Viki's Valuable Finds .
These are the results:
Americo Inc. easily qualified for this group of listings. They are located in West Memphis, Arkansas and produce vinyl goods. Domestic products are used in all of their manufacturing.
Syracuse China Co., founded as Onondaga Pottery Company, was bought out by Libbey glassware manufacturers. Libbey continues to operate 2 manufacturing facilities in the USA - in Lousianna and Ohio as well as worldwide.
Pfaltzgraff is another pottery manufacturer whose pieces Viki's Valuable Finds carries when available. They sold out to Lifetime Brands York PA. Pfaltzgraff has no manufacturing in the USA as of July 2005.
Sakura, a major marketer of consumer dinnerware, was acquired by Oneida in 2000. In 2006 Oneida was reorganized under Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Carrollton China Co., one of eight firms who consolidated in 1929 as the American Chinaware Corporation, to survive the Depression and save the future of pottery made in USA. This company ceased production in 1932.
Smith Corona Typewriter Company ,started in 1886, launched the world's first laptop personal word processor. By 2010, they were no longer producing typewriters and have built a manufacturing facility in Cleveland Ohio to manufacture labels and ribbons.
Helpful Hints:
Take a few extra moments to make sure that you know where your items are being made.
Remember to always check the actual label on each item that you plan to purchase to make sure of the country of manufacture. Last week while shopping in the mall with my daughter we came across jeans with the company name "Made in USA". The only problem was that when I looked at the label it said, "Made in China".
Some American companies still have corporate offices in the USA however all of their manufacturing takes place out of the country. It is then shipped back to be sold.

More to come: I have to stop and think about the jobs that have been lost in the USA so that we could all have more cheaper. Long term, is it really worth what it is costing the American people??
